The Challenge of 400G DWDM

The Telecommunications industry is rapidly moving towards 100G and 400G speeds in the access network.

Historically, passive Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems have been unaffected by leaps in speed. Their design, inherently agnostic to both speed and protocol, has allowed them to support a broad spectrum of optical networks without significant modifications. This versatility has long been a hallmark of DWDM infrastructure, enabling seamless integration across various network configurations and data rate requirements.

However, with the emergence of 400G coherent optics and advanced modulation techniques – such as 16QAM – and higher baud rates operating in excess of 60Gbaud, compatibility with existing 100GHz based DWDM passive infrastructure is being challenged. This increase in Baud rate means that the bandwidths used in data transmission occupy more space than what standard DWDM filter envelopes can accommodate. In short,  ultra high-speed connections of 400G and beyond cannot work on regular DWDM multiplexers.

Addressing this need, LambdaGain is proud to introduce a complete line of 400G compatible Multiplexers that not only support the latest-generation 400G coherent optics but are also backward compatible with lower speed optics. The adoption of 400G compatible Multiplexers should be a strategic consideration not only for enterprises currently using coherent optics, but also for those aiming to future-proof their networks.
